About me

I am an emerging back-end engineer with a prior background in skatepark design, landscape design, and horticulture. Before attending Turing’s certified Back End Engineering program, I have achieved over 4 years of experience working within project based design firms.

With a passion for collaboration and communication, I transitioned my career to focus on backend software development. I have spent the last few months at Turing honing my skills in Ruby, Rails, Git, Agile development, Restful API Building, and PostgreSQL, to name a few.

I have experience crafting and implementing highly scalable and performant RESTful services, reviewing code with best practices in mind, and mentoring teammates in formal and informal knowledge sharing sessions. Additionally, my experience with service-oriented front-end and back-end applications has prepared me well to work in a company with similar values.

Throughout every chapter of my professional life, I have brought my most authentic self to my work. I lead with my heart and my values in the front of my mind. I care about doing “the most good”, ethically, and progressively. Because of this I seek like minded companies, ones that have a mutual sense of respect and values. I have performed different roles within many unique team dynamics and I feel the best one for me is a team that prioritizes a healthy way to learn, grow and take risks. An environment like that would allow me to confidently bring my best self every day.

Love Fern is a relationship-tracking tool that empowers you to build and maintain meaningful connections simulated by taking care of 8-bit ferns.

Project Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kAOgePMFFg

The idea germinated from the scene in "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" where Kate Hudson yells at Mathew McConaughey, "You killed our love fern!" From the initial idea, Love Fern grew healthily into a fully realized site for interacting with ferns that represent relationships a user would have in their life.

Project Roles:

  • Documentation and Project Planning / Management.
  • FE and BE coding support where needed.
  • Code review.

Learning Goals:

  • Implement OAuth2 with OmniAuth to allow users to sign in with Google.
  • Use of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript via Bootstrap to design a pleasing front-end aesthetic.
  • Building a full-scale application from scratch using service-oriented architecture.
  • Design easily consumable API end-points to create accessible, robust backend service.
  • Implement a secure connection between front and backend services deployed to Heroku.
  • Interact with two unique external APIs with efficient data processing and caching.

A project to practice consuming multiple APIs, and formatting them for a front end service (requests determined by a JSON contract and existing wireframes).

Learned how to organize and implement multiple authorization keys, use Postman for testing, set up Webmock and VCR to reduce API calls during development.
