About me
I'm Grace Joh, a software engineer with a passion for making sensible applications with the user in mind.
I am genuinely interested in enriching others. Before software development, I taught high school math at Winfree Academy, where I championed our local at-risk youth and young adults to pursue their high school diplomas. With Winfree, grew in my strengths as a people developer and analytical problem solver as I supported my Algebra students in passing their state assessment and doubled our campus's passing rate.
I thrive in creative spaces that value clarity and efficiency. After leaving my teaching career, I found joy in working at a boba shop. It was refreshing to complete a process of set steps (cup + boba + tea + seal = happy customer!) with room for creativity to deliver a product that brought joy to others. However, serving hundreds of customers during rush hour required a team with methodical roles and clear goals.
Today, I look forward to combining my values and strengths with my newly obtained skills in software development. While contributing to building accessible software that positively impacts users, I strive to learn as much as possible from the people I work with and inspire others to do the same.

RentInform
RentInform
Tools Used
RentInform is a civic data tool designed to help prospective Philadelphia renters gather information about potential new homes, avoid financial and health hazards, and make informed renting decisions to best meet their household's needs.
The front end application handles user interaction through the browser and is built on Rails with HTML and CSS styling. It is responsible for user authentication and authorization and consumes RESTful endpoints exposed through the back end application to deliver data about search results, saved properties, and property details to the views. The front end is also responsible for passing specific data through via JSON requests to perform CRUD actions in the back end database (ex. saving a property for a specific user).
The back end application is an API built with the Rails framework. It exposes 5 RESTful endpoints and is responsible for receiving JSON requests, querying the internal database (certified rental properties), consuming external APIs, and formatting JSON responses to send data to the front end application.
