About me

Before my adventure at Turing began, I had never looked at a line of code in my life. Actually, for most of my life I wanted to be a doctor, having the opportunity to help people every day in a field of work that was constantly expanding and searching for improvement. However, when I got to my freshman year of college, I realized that I had no desire to apply a band-aid, much less perform surgery! Floundering, I threw out all my hooks, and what came back was The Turing School of Software and Design. Unsure at first if this industry was right for me, I completed Turing's "Try Coding" day where you get to write some very basic code ("Hello World!") and immediately I was hooked. I immediately fell in love with the way programming felt like solving a puzzle or a mystery, and how every problem I worked on was unique in its own special way. The more I learned about this industry, the more excited I became. Not only would I be in a field that is constantly expanding and providing me more to learn every day, but I also learned about how the software we write can lead to monumental improvements in the lives of people who truly need it! In just seven months at Turing my life was completely changed in all the best ways possible, I found a drive and passion for development that I never believed was possible. At times I have struggled and been pushed to learn and adapt at such a rapid pace that I wasn't sure I would be able to hang on, but with the skills I've learned and the joy I've found in software development, I know that I'll never look back!

DownDraft is an application for the adventurous and scientifically curious beer enthusiast! The app allows a user to plan a trip and then receive beer recommendations based on the altitude and weather conditions of the location. The application utilizes Google's third party authentication using OAuth. It also implements weather and elevation APIs to determine the information necessary to sort out beer recommendations for a trip.

What We Eatin'? implements GraphQL to host a back-end API that creates and updates records in a PostgreSQL database. The application allows a user to select three restaurants in an area, supplied by the Yelp! API, and generate a web page for their friends to vote on which one to eat at. The application sends mutations to the back-end to generate restaurant records as well as mutations to update vote counts on those records to allow the user and their friends to utilize ranked-choice voting. The advantage of What We Eatin'? over similar applications is that it is platform agnostic and only requires one user to have the application.
