About me
Hi! 👋 I'm Rachel, and I am addicted to solving problems.
Since learning to read music at age 6, I’ve lived for the days when I can hammer away at a new song. As a Calculus tutor in college, I spent my downtime solving practice problems for fun. Now, I solve technical problems as a Software Engineer. When I’m done, I solve them again - even better!
My first career in veterinary medicine was educational and fun (I mean, you do get to pet dogs all day), but I never quite felt the rush that I get from music, math, and coding. I am ecstatic to spend the rest of my life doing what I love - riding the twin thrills of learning new skills and solving complex problems every day!
What I like even more than that fist-pumping feeling of fixing a bug is the experience of going through it with friends. I am talented at identifying people’s strengths and encouraging my teammates to use theirs to their best advantage. I strive to support others by valuing their humanity and experiences above all else.
Many years in high-stress environments (vet hospitals i.e. life or death situations) have taught me to keep a cool head under pressure. I accomplish that by staying impeccably organized. As I like to say, “I project-manage my life.” The proof is in my 13 color-coded Google Calendars. 😄
I’m a Front End Developer looking for the opportunity to work for an ethical company with a product and mission I can be proud of. DM me anytime - I’d love to connect with you. Let's talk about what excites you! 🌱

EverUse
EverUse
Tools Used
Purpose
This full stack e-commmerce tool was built on behalf of a real-life client: EverUse Upcycled Products. As a cross-functional team, we crafted an online ordering system for clients to view and request products from the sellers. The application was engineered to meet EverUse's specific business needs, and is scalable so that it can grow alongside the business.
Learning
This project represents our first time learning and implementing both continuous integration with CircleCI and network requests with GraphQL. Both brought challenging opportunities for growth and ultimately contributed to the success of the application as a whole by streamlining our processes and enhancing the quality of pushed code.
Collaboration
Collaborating with a back end team to make our user experience goals a reality was exceptionally gratifying - and FUN! The back end team went above and beyond expectations and implemented background workers to complete the order form process and ensure consistent communication with both buyers and sellers to close the transaction.

D&D: The Rookie's Roadmap
D&D: The Rookie's Roadmap
Tools Used
Purpose
The Rookie's Roadmap is a Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) wiki for complete beginners. It was designed with the intention that even folks with very limited technical ability would be able to navigate the site with ease to find the information they are most interested in.
Features
Information is broken up by category into several easy-to-access directories, plus a searchable Glossary page containing links to every concept on the site. The Resources page contains useful links to external websites and articles that were instrumental in my own understanding of D&D, and that I thought would be most helpful to my audience.
Roadmap
I have many additional features planned for the future, including stylistic and navigational enhancements, to make the user experience even better.
Happy adventuring!

Learning
As a front-end team, we used this project as an opportunity to challenge ourselves by self-teaching and implementing 3 brand new (to us) back-end technologies: Express.js, Knex.js, and PostgresQL. Starting with a two day research sprint, we dove into understanding relational databases and Restful APIs. In the end, we created and deployed a fully functional relational database and server, while also creating and deploying a fun and interactive front-end application.

Overlook
Overlook
Tools Used
Purpose
Enjoy peace and luxury at The Overlook! This hotel booking site allows a user to log into a beautiful personalized dashboard with a record of all their past bookings at The Overlook, including dates and room details.Search for available rooms by desired check-in date, and filter search results by the type of room you want. Once a room is selected, you may confirm your booking or return to your previous search results to change the details of your stay.
Learning
Accessibility and elegance were the primary focuses of this project. It was tested using WAVE Evaluation Tool, Lighthouse, Colorblind - Dalton, and VoiceOver to ensure that navigation and visibility were consistent for users of all abilities. A great deal of time and attention went into the UI to create a user experience reflective of the brand of the Overlook.
Roadmap
I am actively working on improvements to this application, which is so far my most extensive build in vanilla JavaScript. Future UI improvements include refactoring for responsiveness across all screen sizes.
