About me

Hi I’m Emily. I’m a front-end developer at the Turing School of Software and Design. My goal in the world of software engineering is to leverage my background as both a trained biological scientist and a computer networking educator to incorporate knowledge of learning and organic systems into the design of technological tools that improve human-computer interactions. In my spare time, I enjoy pulling imaginative visions from the ethereal plane into corporeal form via the art of woodworking. Software engineering captivates me because, like woodworking, it involves the translation of structured thought into concrete form with the goal of meeting a specific need. For my entire life, I have been enraptured by the landscape of information that we exist within. I have come to view computer programming as perhaps the ultimate medium for the sculpting of reality due to its proximity to raw information. I look forward to offering my perspective for structured thought to a dynamic, nurturing, and forward-leaning employment environment.

Planty Swapper is a responsive mobile-first application designed for plant lovers to share plantsCollaborated with back end team to build mobile first web application for plant lovers to exchange plants.

Features: This application allows a user to scroll through a carousel of plants, clippings, and seeds that are available in their area. A user can post plants, clippings, and seeds based on their zip code and message back and forth with folks who are interested in swapping plants.

Implementation: Self taught ReactNative to implement messaging with web-sockets, enable camera usage, and image storage.

Testing: Tested using Jest and React Testing Library

Weather Gram

Weather Gram is a multipage application that allows a user to check the weather based on location input.

Features: A user can input a zip code or city name to get todays weather, or a three day forecast for their location. Additionally, you can save your favorited locations and choose the "Random" selection to see a randomly generated city's weather.

Implementation: Built using React with React Router. Deployed with Heroku.

Testing: Tested with Cypress.

Tomatoes Podridos

Tomatoes Podridos

Tomates Podridos was a paired project for Mod 3 at Turing School of Software and Design. Our objective was to build a React app in a short time and consume a movie api to create a Movie Streaming/Rating site.

Features: A user is able to view and browse through a selection of movies using the carousel feature. When a user clicks on a movie, you are routed to a new page that includes an embedded movie trailer, a description, runtime, and rating.

Implementation: Built using React with React Router. Deployed with Heroku.

Testing: We used Cypress to complete comprehensive End-to-End testing.

Mycology Horoscope

Mycology Horoscope is a visually playful site linking mycology facts with a users zodiac sign.

Features: A user can input their birthday, view their zodiac sign with a correlated mushroom, and choose to save their horoscope.

Implementation: The purpose of this project was to take on the challenge of learning and implementing Express, a Back-End stretch technology. This multipage application was built in Javascript using React Router, JSX and was deployed using Heroku. The API was created using Express and deployed with Heroku.

Testing: Tested with Cypress.
