About me

From deployment overseas to competition dance floors, the same curiosity and love of learning that defined my service as a soldier and teacher now fuel my creative work building impactful apps as a software engineer. Here are the skills, qualities, and experience I can bring to your team:

Frontend: React | TypeScript | JavaScript | Sass | CSS | HTML

Backend: Node.js | Express | REST APIs

Testing: Cypress | Jasmine Mocha | Chai

Other: Git | GitHub | Functional/OOP | Wireframing | Accessibility

I learn best by getting my hands dirty solving real-world problems. While training to become an Arabic/Chinese linguist in the military, I realized that the sooner I grappled with difficult, authentic language material, the more I learned. The same grit and growth mindset I developed in training and on deployment have enabled me to hit the ground running as a software engineer solving new problems each day.

I have an insatiable curiosity and love of learning that drive me to continuously expand my knowledge, build my skillset, and challenge the status quo. As a dance instructor, I spent hours before and after work each day with senior instructors and coaches refining my technical skills as a dancer and my soft skills as a teacher. Now that I am a software engineer, I apply these same habits to learning all that I can from my colleagues, supervisors, and mentors, allowing me to build better products with each iteration.

I'm at my best on teams that value close collaboration and direct feedback. In my work as a military linguist, I built collaborative relationships within and across teams to collect and share relevant, time-sensitive information that helped ensure the safety of everyone on base. Our success was built on the trust we had in each other, and the trust others placed in us. My work as a software engineer places similar emphasis on teamwork and trustworthiness, whether I'm giving honest feedback in code reviews, addressing security vulnerabilities, or doing any of the other things, big and small, that secure the confidence of the end user.

Our team of four software engineers built a news feed for mental wellness using React, Hooks, TypeScript, CSS, and HTML. I self-taught and implemented TypeScript over a weekend to achieve MVP in half the allotted project time. We refactored all class-based React components with Hooks to reduce complexity and increase readability. In addition, we applied responsive design using media queries and a mobile-first approach to handle a range of screen sizes.

My project partner and I built a mock movie streaming service using React, Router, JSX, CSS, and Cypress. We incorporated React Router to update user interface based on dynamic URL paths and wrote end-to-end automated test suite covering all user flows for reduced bugs and backward compatibility.

On this solo project, I built a hotel booking manager using vanilla JavaScript (ES6), Sass/SCSS, and HTML. I handled asynchronous network requests to log in, display rooms, and make bookings with Fetch API calls. By leveraging Sass/SCSS preprocessor syntax, I was able to DRY up my code, resulting in modular and reusable stylesheets. The end product was fully-accessible through semantic elements and ARIA attributes, and tested for accessibility with WAVE and Lighthouse.

For this project, my team built a recipe browser and pantry manager using JavaScript (ES6), CSS, HTML, Mocha, and Chai. Wireframes helped us model user stories and plan an object-oriented class architecture with vanilla JavaScript. We also applied test-driven development principles to write a unit and integration test suite with Mocha and Chai. By leveraging Agile development processes with GitHub Project and a defined Git workflow, we were able to effectively coordinate team efforts from start to finish.
